- BELLUM is a fast action game of
- destruction. The aim is to try and
- survive for as long as possible against
- an endless onslaught of suicidal aliens.
-
- It runs in low resolution and can
- only be played using a joystick.
-
- Points are scored for shooting
- aliens as follows:
-
- Ordinary green one 10
- Flying green one 50
- Ordinary purple one 50
- Flying purple one 250
-
- There is also a time bonus which is
- added to your score on completion of an
- attack wave.
-
-
- You control a ship which starts off
- as a very basic low power model, but it
- is possible to increase its speed and
- fire power by shooting various types of
- bonus icons, these are as follows:
-
- Legs Increase speed
- of ship
- Three prongs Add triple bomb
- feature
- One prong Increase speed
- of bombs
-
- When your ship is hit, bits of it
- break up and fall away, until there is
- nothing left, and you die. It is
- possible to rebuild your ship by
- shooting the bonus spanner.
-
- All these bonus icons start to
- appear after a few attack waves.
-
- When your ship becomes very small
- and decrepit, it starts to lose the
- speed and fire power gained from the
- bonusses. These can be regained,
- however, by doing a bit of rebuilding
- and shooting the bonus icons again.
-
- When the time bonus reaches zero,
- the bonus icons stop appearing, so you
- cannot hang around indefinitely at the
- end of an attack wave building up the
- power of your ship.
-
- As the attack waves progress, the
- aliens fire more bombs, homing bombs,
- and engage in more suicide dives.
-
- The status line at the top of the
- screen displays your score, the current
- high score, the current value of the
- time bonus, and the attack wave number,
- in that order.
-
- To quit BELLUM, press both SHIFT
- keys together after you die (a little
- esoteric I know).
-
-
